Pieris brassica (Large White) and Pieris rapae (small white)
Small whites are usually about 4-5 cm across the wings (wingspan). They are commonly found in British gardens, fields and meadows throughout the summer months and are a native British species. They
are also found throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia and although
not native, they can also be found in North America and Australia. They are unsurprisingly, predominantly white in colour, sometime with a slightly yellowish tinge. They have black markings including black or grey spots on each of the forewings (males have onespot per fore wing, females have two) and black or grey colour on the tips of the forewings. Caterpillars are green with yellow stripes. Caterpillars feed on cruciferous plant leaves e.g. cabbage, mustard.
Large whites usually have a wingspan of between 5.5.cm and 6.5cm. Commonly found throughout Britain, they are mainly white with black markings.
The large white caterpillar prefers the outer leaves of the foodplant, where the small usually prefers the inner leaves.
